The business news of today is reporting what biologists warned us about 30 years ago. "When you destroy the diversity in nature or in an ecological system, the likelihood of endangering that entire system against any threat is multiplied ten times."

What does biology have in common with business? Why should we heed the words of science? Giant monoliths of companies such as WorldCom and Enron have worked their way to the top of the business food chain, and rather than provide solid services and create revenues based on REAL need, they play paper games of deception to maintain financial positions and a certain political pecking order.

Faceless and Rootless Business Leads Nowhere

These companies are or were the ideal of corporate power and influence, and they gobbled up numerous smaller companies and competitors along the way. Thus is born the monolith, the titan of business, and the moment that organization has reached it's zenith is the very moment the seeds of its destruction have been firmly planted.

Why? Because these companies no longer have a face, they no longer serve a constituency of people related to their services, their territory of influence covers too many people-too many areas of concern-just too much to make them effective in dealing with individual and local concerns.

Hence, people become concerned with building paper and financial castles in the sky, rather than working on improving and responding to services their company supply on earth. People at the top are worried about their stockholders, stock options, and how much influence they can peddle in the political marketplace.

These events undermine the value of American business, and it will undermine your business-look how much value has been lost on the stock exchange. This is a prime example of monolithic companies or an organization which has undermined the diversity of a system, and it's health tragically effects the entire existence of that system.

One Fat Apple Can Destroy The Barrel
The biologist understands all of this only to well. When you have one organization governing an entire ecosystem, if that organization is infected the entire system is in jeopardy. It is in jeopardy because all of the other members of that system depend upon that one governing organization-it falls the whole thing falls. This is the opposite of diversity.

DIVERSITY: the quality of state of being composed of different parts, elements, or individuals. SYNONYMS: variety, diverseness, multifariousness, multiformity, multiplicity. If one of the parts gets sick, there are a number of diverse individuals in the system who are healthy and will stay that way.

Today, the American dream has incorporated the ways of giant monoliths, and it is proving fatal. It does not matter whether you are a new , small, large ,developing, or maturing business-one of the remedies to this destructive trend is contact with your customers.

It is a primary need of any company to keep its eye on what matters-its customer. When a company follows the ebbs and flow of its customer base, it will learn how to best serve that customer and what new products and services it can introduce to better serve that customer. Eventually that company will not only establish a customer base, it will diversify it's own products and services based on the demands of that customer base.

This is a strong, individual, and diversified organization that is based on REALITY. This is a business that will weather all the business storms, and can stand against the threat of any competitor. It is a company that would make any biologist proud.
