Issue 12: Timing Is Everything

Never Take Success or Your Market For Granted
|
Dear Reader,
There is a mysterious force at work in marketing and
sales, and it is summed up in the phrase "Timing is
Everything!" It is a published FACT or at least
understanding in the television/radio direct sales world,
that certain times of the year represent "new
beginnings" for the consumer. Fall or the start of the
school year, and the new year (January) are good
times to introduce new products. People tend to
gravitate towards starting something different in their
lives at these times of the year. That is why you can
sell golf clubs on TV in January!

The Mysterious Force
However, even though there are times of the year and
seasons that offer some certainty about consumer
behavior, there are forces at work that are far beyond
explanation. Timing is Everything is about the best we
can do to approximate any sort of understanding of
what is at work here. And even more important is what
we do, how do we react, what position should we
take when this mysterious force comes into play during
our marketing and sales efforts?

Be Humble and Waste No Opportunity
The best way I can describe this phenomena is by past
example when my clients responded to this force. All of
my clients-when success hit-were in the same boat.
They were small start up ventures that suddenly
experienced tremendous success. Sounds attractive-
right? Well it is wonderful to be faced with 30-50 times
growth in your business within a 2-3 month period, but
some scary things happen. First-instant success
breeds an attitude of invincibility, or "We are on top of
it now." This attitude lead to sloppy and undisciplined
thinking, and mistakes started to creep in. Second-
the "it is going to be like this forever" belief grows, and
this leads to forgetfulness about competitors and future
business planning. Third-these attitudes caused clients
to lose perspective that it was their hard work and luck
which has paid off, BUT instead they begin to feel
ENTITLED to receive success and rewards. This is
partly because everyone around them is selling them on
this idea. People begin to believe and treat successful
clients like they are the Revenue gods and the clients
in turn start to believe it.....

|
All of these non-productive attitudes that started to
creep in caused clients to lose their edge. Their time
had arrived. Their moment in the "Glorious Business
Sun" when everything is clicking, working, and paying
out dividends. That is the time to work even harder.
Because it is during this time that the consumer and
business world opens its doors to your success, and
numerous opportunities arrive at your doorstep. But you
must react with precision and knowledge and take
NOTHING for granted. There have been some clients
who did not waste their opportunity, and went on to
build an ongoing extremely successful business. These
people had the knowledge and worked with
professionals who understood this process, and knew
what to do plus when to do it. No opportunity was lost
or wasted. There were others who lost perspective, and
their opportunities dwindled. Timing is Everything!
Sincerely,
Caswell Forrest
