Keywords: Dive Into The Mind of Your Customer!
.
The best way to understand what keywords are is very simple. Think of what your customer would type into a search engine to find your web page. In the example above 'web design' is listed as a keyword, this means TriCom would like to appear in the search listings when someone types in 'web design'. TriCom is a web design firm so that makes perfect sense. There are several tools available to help create your keyword list, your designer will show you how to use these or do it for you. The keyword lists generated will likely be too long so you will get to pick and choose the best keywords from your list, your designer should help with this as well. You should have no more than 50 keywords, around 20-25 is best.
Description: The ALL-Important Headline
.
The 'description' tag is just like it sounds, this is your chance to sell your company. When a search engine shows results for a particular search, you see two things the information in the 'description' and 'title' tag. You want to explain clearly and briefly what your company does and why the visitor should click on your link instead of one of the others on that results page. The 'description' and 'title' tag should be checked and re-checked before you submit them to the search engines. Once they are in the engine's database they are more or less written in stone. Anything can be fixed but the time and cost associated with this is usually not worth it, so please take note of this warning.
Title: Your Chance to Grab That Sale
.
The 'title' tag is another easy, but important one. In the 'title' tag you want to include a keyword or two if possible and your company name. The 'title' tag should be under 64 characters long. Remember this is one of the two things a potential visitor will get to read when deciding which site to visit from the list of results.

Once all these tags are in place and your website is ready, it is time to submit to the search engines. There are three types of search engines we will cover in the next issue: Free submission based Engines- Pay submission based Engines and Pay-per-Click Engines.

The Magical META TAGS
Meta tags are used by your designer to explain the contents of your web page to the search engines. Meta tags and their contents are not visible on your web page, but adding meta tags to your web pages allows you to explicitly assign title, keywords, and descriptions to your web pages. Many search engines use these tags to index and rank your web site. Adding meta tags to your web pages can significantly improve the ranking of your web page on search engines.
