Issue 70: Pay Per Click Or the Internet's Greatest Peep Show on Earth!
.
Dear Reader,

This is the BUZZ! Cash is KING and the search engines have found a way to put it in their pockets! They are creating an internet UNLIKE the Great Equalizer it use to be! Television and radio use to be masters of the "Per Inquiry" scenario, however today they are hard pressed to even offer that alternative. Now it is "cold hard cash" or no airtime.

The vastness of the internet is it's own best and worst enemy, because when you add human impatience and a short attention span, who takes the time to find what they want? It is a "first come and first serve basis." But in spite of how you may feel about management styles and cash requirements of the web-we are still left with what practical solutions will BEST position you to achieve your objectives in cyberspace? With search engines such as Google which hosts over 200 million searches a day, an advertiser has an unprecedented audience to draw on from the biggest "Peep Show on Earth!"

Pay-Per-Click takes over the world

If you have not heard of pay-per-click advertising that is okay, because I guarantee if you use the Internet to search then you have used it. The premise is very simple, you decide how much a visitor is worth for a particular search phrase and that is what you pay per visitor to your website. You do have to keep the competition in mind so that your website will be within in the top ten, or more importantly the top 3-5. Once you figure out some of the search terms you would like to come up under, the fun part starts.

Overture has Overturned and Overtaken Web Advertising

To keep the discussion simple I will focus on one main search engine, Overture.com they are the big daddy of them all in this arena. They also have an amazing amount of online help to get you going. If you are in the top three search results for a particular search term, you will show up on more partner search engines. If you are under the top 10, you are out of luck showing up anywhere but Overture.com. The truth is they have changed their business to feeding results to other engines, so we make sure that our clients are in the top 3 or at least top 5 results. If they cannot make that rank, we will not use that search term. Here is a partial list of the engines that use Overture's results:MSN, ALTA VISTA, YAHOO, LYCOS, and INFOSPACE.

We start with your list of search terms. Using the tools on Overture's website we can search these terms and see how many times they were searched in a given month, and also search terms that are similar to them. As you can see your search list just multiplied by ten times. We do this with each of your search terms and some of the new one as well until we come up with an arsenal of search terms. Now to the pricing-the key here is to pick search terms that fit your budget. Terms that are searched 20,000 times per month would be too expensive for most small companies, but remember we want that top 3-5 listing. This part is time consuming but worth the effort.

We list all your search terms in Overture's system. Once they are accepted and online we go to work. We check each search term and Overture will show the amount of cash needed to be #1, 3, and 5. This is where you and your designer decide what amount would makes sense, keeping in mind the search volume those terms generate each month, and the popularity of your TVmercial or Radiomercial and the traffic those commmercials are driving to your site. You must set a monthly limit, but don't spend it all in 10 minutes with a expensive and popular term. Frequency throughout the month is important. We monitor the traffic and adjust search terms and prices to get the best results. There are many other engines that offer this service, but we always start with Overture and work out to the smaller ones. This whole process takes less than one week, and your site traffic is immediate.

Sincerely,

Caswell Forrest
