Tricks That Don't Work and Can Undermine Your Business

You absolutely can fool some of the search engines with "tricks", but there aren't ANY techniques that could fool ALL of the search engines for very long. Even if you did find a way to fool some of the search engines it would only work for a limited time. The search engines are well aware of every trick in the book, and most have teams of people dedicated to combat this kind of abuse by penalizing sites or banning them entirely from their database.

These people are sometimes referred to as the "spam cops" or "spam Nazis" and they are very motivated at finding the cheaters. Many sites get banned on the search engines for trying the "tricks" and when that happens it's almost impossible to get unbanned. You need to quit worrying so much about search engines. Just concentrate on building great content, and then use the rest of your time getting link partners. Your traffic will explode and your search engine rankings will take care of themselves automatically. All the search engines will like something about your site!

Quick Links...

Dear Reader,

Now if you talk to most search engine promotion "experts" they will tell you that they know all the judges (the search engines) on a personal basis they'll get you to the top of the listings with such and such technique. About 99% of the web site promotion experts out there use little "tricks" that actually don't work very well at all! Some of these "tricks" are using doorway pages (pages designed only for search engine appeal), cloaking web pages (using scripts to fool the search engines), resubmitting your pages etc.

Don't Take My Word For It-Try It Yourself

Try this: Go to AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) and type into the search box link:YourSite.com (Leave off the www). This will list the reciprocal links to your web site. Try link:crownjewels.com and you get over 1600 links to it.

Think about this now: The robots say to themselves, "Here is a site that must be popular or why would so many websites SIMILAR to it have its link on their pages?" Remember that only SIMILAR sites with SIMILAR THEMES would probably have a link to your site. They give more importance to this than you submitting your link to them.

Go to popular and heavily trafficked sites that sell something similar to what you sell and use AltaVista to find out how many reciprocal links they have. This will prove to you I am right. The more popular sites almost ALWAYS have lots of links to them!

Leave the Fighting to People who Want to Waste Their Time Trying to Trick the Search Engines

Search engines are nothing more than links to your site. Most people try to constantly fight for their positioning in the search query listings. Forget about that. Leave the fighting to people who want to waste their time trying to trick the search engines for a limited time. Quit trying to compete with the large organizations pouring millions into their marketing. Completely forget about Search Engine positioning and go after the reciprocal links. The Search Engines will then believe you are a heavily visited site because you will be! As your links increase, your site's traffic will begin to soar! And there is no greater opportunity to create those invaluable links when you are popular-airing on TV or Radio and everyone is exposed to your offer!

Remember, search engine visitors to your site many times are not even qualified visitors. Many visitors pop into your home page for 2 seconds and then leave. You've probably seen this in your server logs. We all do it when we are using the search engines. Either it wasn't the information we were looking for or we didn't want to wait for some lame flash or big graphic to load. These visitors shouldn't even count, but they do get counted in your server logs.

Qualified Visitors Will buy Your Product or Service-Hits Mean Nothing

Reciprocal links bring in much more qualified visitors than the search engines unless you pay for Pay-for-Click rankings. Visitors that come in from your link partners were already on a web site which had matching Themes to yours. They already have a good idea of what type of site you are. They will come into your site and actually stay awhile and maybe even buy! These visitors should count as double credit.

Linking to Your Goldmine

Okay, so now you're probably wondering how you get people to WANT to put your link on their web sites? Simple, you have similar Themes. You are similar, but not competition. Other site owners will be happy to link to your site as long as they already have a link page and your site is not direct competition for them. A lot of people wonder how they can get a better search engine ranking than their competition. Simple, give the search engines EXACTLY what they want.

Some of the major factors they consider are the following: How old is the website or how long has the engine known about it? How large is the website? Was it properly constructed? How many hyperlinks are there to outside websites? One of the main criteria search engines use is how many links on other websites to this site? The more links to it, the more importance the search engine will give it when it compares it to other sites with similar content.
